Athens Tutorial Program, Inc., through the Child Advocacy Committee, opened its first tutorial center in 1981 to serve the children of the Nellie B. Housing complex. Mr. Aaron Heard, with only a few helpers, created ATP in an effort to eradicate the illiteracy in Athens-Clarke County. Funds from the Emmanual Episcopal Church, the First Presbyterian Church, and the City Government ensured a successful start. Mr. Heard invited Ms. Barbara Thurmond Archibald to join the team in 1982. Since it first opened its doors, ATP has maintained a strong presence in the community. With the help of many volunteers over the years, ATP's reputation has grown, and the organization has received many awards and grants.
